The "silter" are small rural buildings
that were once used to preserve milk, while waiting
for the following treatments.
They are often masterpieces of rural architecture, that
were located in humid zones or near springs or rilles
to take advantage of humidity and the cooling action
of water: the silter were managed in a cooperative
way, involving several breeding families.
The "baitello" of Valmazzone, located in commune
of Edolo, is one of the most characteristic silter
of the Valle Camonica. It is unique due to the type
of cover, made in granite slabs of incredibile weight
(one ton each), simply leaned against the side wall,
made of stone with a medium thickness of 50 centimeters.
The weight of the cover and the fragility of the soaked
terrain caused in time the structural displacement of
the walls, considerable openings and the slow slide
of the covering stones, that were lately sustained by
robust poles jabbed into the terrain.
A recovery project made in the Parco Adamello led to
the total restructure of the silter of Valmazzone,
through the recovery of walls, placement of water drainage
pipes, and remake of the internal pavement.
The building, that has the construction or last restructure
date - 1844 - written in the granite lintel of the door,
measures 3 meters by 4, and can be reached from the
town of Mù or from the country road of Mount
Colmo.
The project
The Parco Adamello will use the
baitello, rare and esclusive jewel of traditional
rural architecture, as a small museum dedicated to milk,
testifying the farm work and breeding in high mountain.
