The rock art engravings of the Valle Camonica are more
than three thousand: a treasure brought to light thanks
to the work and decennial study of many historians and
researchers. A patrimony that makes the Valle Camonica
the richest rock art river basin of all Europe.
The engravings are sparse all over the territory and
represent, for many tourists, the most important cultural
reason to visit the Valle Camonica. Therefore, each
initiative regarding their recovery and dissemination
represents not only a contribution to research on the
life of ancient local people, but also a resource for
tourism and economical promotion.
In the Parco Adamello, at the border with the Naquane
National Park and the Rock Art Regional Reserve of Ceto-Cimbergo-Paspardo,
there are many prehistoric evidences that deserve to
be brought to light, appreciated as original, artistic,
religious and daily expressions of the ancient inhabitants.
The high Valle Camonica, particularly the area between
the communes of Berzo Demo and Edolo, is significant
from this point of view: since the 4° millenium
b.C. the priests-artists have attended regularly this
territory, unique for its climatic and strategic characteristics,
engraving numerous rocks.
Since the 50s there are news on the presence of engraved
rocks in the commune of Sonico. Here, between 1987 and
1989, Ausilio Priuli and his assistants made a census,
a research and study of over 40 engraved surfaces, connected
to industrial and agrarian archaeology, sites with strong
folkloristic and legendary elements, and with singular
toponyms. The most significant rocks are those located
at "Coren de le Fate", where there are several layers
of signs: from those engraved between the 4° and
3° millenium b.C., to those of the 2° millenium
b.C. (Bronze age) representing maps and layout plans,
and finally those of the 1° millenium b.C. (Iron
age) representing shovels and symbols that lead back
to objects used during funeral rituals.
This way the project "Recovery and arrangement of the
rock art area Corno delle Fate" was born, carried out
by the Parco Adamello: a guided tour inside the prehistoric
culture of the territory of Sonico. The starting point
for the excursion to "Coren de le Fate" is
in front of the town hall; the itinerary continues near
the ancient town furnace and along the road once used
to load it.
The project
The project was financed with funding
from the state law on protected areas (L. 394/91). A
naturalistic, archaeological and folkloristic ring itinerary
was made, that focus on the area upstream
of the inhabited center of Sonico,
between "Cornel
de l'aiva" and "Coren de le Fate".
The intervention regarded cleaning paths, reconstruction
of small walls, making the most of some naturalistic
features (birches,
larches, chestnut trees, juniper and dog rose bushes)
and arranging a spring: in fact, the presence of water
can be connected to the religious and ritual activity
of the entire site. At "Coren
de le Fate" a hut-refuge was made to host the visitors
of the itinerary, and to allow resting and reading the
environment and the didactic and scientific documentation,
useful to visit the engraved
rocks.
In front of the town hall and along all the itinerary
there are some showcases that illustrate the historic,
cultural and environmental features of the surrounding
landscape, together with ligneous stars decorated with
symbols from the engravings, used to give out indications.
Furthermore, a pamphlet (with a brief english
translation) and also a pubblication were
made, edited by Ausilio
Priuli, regarding the rock art engravings of the territory
of Sonico, comprising all the findings of anthropological
importance: a good guide for visiting the itinerary.
